TLAF Blog

My friend Mat setup a blog for his company, The Little App Factory, tonight, using WordPress 1.2. I think he was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to setup!

Pity about the default theme on his page, though. ;) He said he's going to make it the same design as the rest of the site…

The blog is located here.

Wordpress 1.2

Wordpress 1.2 was recently released. I actually caved in and installed the final candidate a couple of days ago, and it's great! I really like the plugin system, as it's much easier to add in functionality now…

“Apple to slow OS X development”

According to a number of news sources, Apple is going to slow down the development cycle of Mac OS X in the future, because it's not sustainable to release updates every year. I can understand this reasoning, but I don't think Apple should slow down the development cycle. It should be doing its best to make Mac OS X THE BEST operating system out there. Even though Longhorn isn't due out until 2006, it is looking pretty good (technology-wise), and Apple needs something to compete with that.

Wal-Mart Prank

Oracle 9iAS Portal Reference

I'm doing a bit of 9iAS Portal development at work right now, and I came across a site with a whole heap of pages that describe different parts of Portal and how to configure it. It's extremely helpful if you're doing any Portal work!

Another site I have found useful from time to time is Mark Rittman's Oracle Weblog.

MT Licensing changes

John Welch asked for alternatives to Moveable Type now that they've changed their licensing terms and prices. I'd like to suggest WordPress, which I'm using on this site.

In answer to your questions/requirements:

1) WordPress can import from MT. I did it when I changed over. I believe it can even put in some sort of re-direction from the location of your old posts to your new post. Don't quote me on that, though.
2) Stylesheets should be OK. I have a style switcher on this site, which is basically some JavaScript that calls some stylesheets contained in a folder within the weblog root directory.
3) Yup.
4) It supports ecto using the MoveableType API, I believe. A quick search on the WordPress support forums returns this thread.

It's also quite easy to setup and extend, and WordPress 1.2 is due to be released this week, with support for plugins, and other stuff which I'm not sure about! The site also has active forums, a Wiki that contains tips and tricks, documentation, and a list of all hacks that can be applied.

“ARD is not Citrix”

I came across an article today on The Bynk Zone, which I found very interesting. John (the author) talks about the lack of a Citrix/Windows Terminal Server-equivalent for MacOS X. This sounds like a really good idea, that I think Apple should implement. It's already basically there with multiple users, they just need to allow remote clients to spawn new user sessions and window servers, I'd assume…

I'd personally have no use for this, but it's a feature that would be very useful in the enterprise and video editing, rendering, etc.

News Blurbs

I've been meaning to post these articles for the past couple of days, but hadn't got round to it:

From Slashdot: A designer virus that is designed to act as a treatment for AIDS. Pretty cool idea. The only issue is whether the virus mutates to cause havoc within the body, as noted in the article, "It's also possible that HIV and the therapeutic virus could mutate around each other and recombine to make an altogether new virus." The treatment is also transferrable by sexual intercourse, which is pretty ironic.

From Science Blog: On a similar note, some researchers have developed viruses to kill cancerous cells in the lungs and colon, leaving healthy cells intact.

According to Ars Technica and the BBC, some archaeologists believe they have found the Library of Alexandria, which held the works of ancient writers, before it was burnt down.

Sony DSC-P93

Sony DSC-P93 I got a nice surprise at work today - my digital camera, which was posted yesterday, had arrived! Inside the small box was the camera, a mini tripod and my 256Mb Memory Stick Pro. The camera, a Sony DSC-P93, seems really good, after taking a couple of shots with it. There's a dial on the top of the camera that allows me to select different modes, such as candlelight, twilight, scenery, and so on. There's also a manual mode, where I can fine-tune many of the settings, including the aperture (not that I know what that is) and the shutter speed, all the way down to 1/2000th of a second! Should be good for some action shots.
