“Microsoft Research DRM Talk” and copy protection

There have been many, many posts about Cory Doctorow's talk on DRM at Microsoft Research on the 17th June, and I thought I'd chime in with my views on it…

“Fighting for Apple”

Courtesy of PhotoMatt: Michael Heilemann is a switcher and talks about zealotry and how people using one system will usually dislike the systems that others use, because they don't know them.

I think this applies to both sides of the traditional OS camp… Mac users will often act elitist and dislike Windows users, and Windows users will call Mac users snobs and dislike them too.

Shrek 2

I saw Shrek 2 last night, and loved it! It has to be the funniest movie I've seen this year… It's basically a continuation of the plot of the first Shrek, where Fiona and Shrek visit Fiona's parents, the King and Queen of Far Far Away…

It's full of great jokes, and subtle ones that are just as funny. The one I particularly liked was when "Mungo" (I think that's the name), a giant gingerbread man, is stomping through the streets of Far Far Away, he walks towards a Starbucks and grabs the coffee cup off the roof. People scramble out of the store, and the camera follows their movements as the run into the Starbucks across the road. :D

I liked the fact that it had little jabs at everyone (including the US), and that it parodied many other films (a list of which I can't think of at this early time).

I'll definitely have to get this (as well as Shrek!) when it comes out on DVD.

“Google’s latest Gmail marketing is brilliant”

Scoble mentions how the rollout of GMail addresses is a great marketing ploy by Google.

I hadn't thought of it in this way before, but that does make sense. It keeps everyone interested, because everyone wants a GMail address (since there are a limited amount of people who can get them right now), and this generates more interest in Google. Very nice.

GMail

A friend of Mat's sent me an invite earlier today for a GMail address, which I've signed up for. Yay! The interface isn't too bad, the ads aren't obtrusive, and I really like the contact autocomplete feature.

The Cat Empire concert reviews

Came across a couple of reviews of The Cat Empire concerts on Sunday and Monday.

Unofficial Cat Empire Site

Wow! I was sure that there had to be an unofficial Cat Empire website, but hadn't found one… until now. http://www.TheCatEmpire.info

They even have photos and movies (better than mine ;) ) from the concert on Sunday, here.

“The strange, sad death of the American way”

"The strange, sad death of the American way" is a nice commentary on the Bush and the invasion of Iraq.

WordPress Asides

I've implemented an edited version of the "Asides" functionality developed by PhotoMatt. I also used some edited code by MtDewVirus, from the WordPress forum thread.

I just tried to post the code, but something went wrong with it… Probably all the PHP tags, etc. Anyone know how to escape the whole block of code??

UPDATE: I found I didn't like MtDewVirus' code, so I've changed it over to PhotoMatt's implementation. :) It looks a lot better, I think. Now I just have to work out how he got those icons before the asides in there… I won't post the code, because it's already on PhotoMatt's site.

“Bush disputes 9/11-Iraq findings”

From the BBC: Bush has disputed the findings of a commission that set out to investigate the 9/11 attacks and the supposed connection connection between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein.
