I just got back from seeing the musical, The Lion King, at the Capitol Theatre. All I can say is… WOW.
Two friends and I went, and we had some pretty good seats (which is always a bonus). The first 'act' of the musical is awe-inspiring, as you see all the costumes and people dressed as animals. I really wasn't expecting the costumes to be as good as they were. You can obviously tell there are people underneath the costumes, but they worked so well that it didn't matter.
I thought the sets and props were extraordinary… The scene changes were seamless, and the way some of the scenes were done was amazing. I was wondering how they were going to do the 'wilderbeast' scene where Mufasa is killed. (oops, should've put a spoiler disclaimer at the start :D. my bad.) When you see it, it's just… fantastic.
There's also one scene where Simba is debating whether he should return to pride rock or not, and a small green lights illuminate the set behind him, with darkness in between the lights. The effect of this is that the people walking in and out of the set are barely recognisable, and are able to bring parts of a lion's face together in the background. Light is then shone onto the face (I think), and it literally seems like there is a face floating above the set… Wow. Hats off to the set designers and lighting people.
The actors were great as well, although I thought the boy playing the young Simba could've been a bit better. He had a weird accent, and tried too hard in his singing, which made the song, "I just can't wait to be King", sound pretty terrible (in my opinion). Apart from that, the actors were great, and there was some humour added in, without making it tacky.
Lucy didn't come tonight (because of the price - $100), but I'm thinking I'll splurge and take the both of us to a show sometime soon. I think she'll really like it.
Basically, it was a great show. I recommend it to anyone!
