DrunkenBlog has a post on the new version of AdiumX that is coming out soon.
The post mentions the new meta-contacts system (which is great!!!). It's not mentioned in the post, but it's something that has been in Proteus for a while (which I missed when I moved from Proteus to Adium).
Here's a screenshot of my contact list, which has transparency enabled, along with different background colours for different statuses.
You can also see the buddy icons for each of the buddies on the left of each [blurred out] name. You can set in the preferences whether to use the buddy icon or the icon you have set in Address Book.

I look forward to the next interview! It’d be interesting to see what’s going on with Fire… I haven’t used it for years, but it’s the first IM client I used on MacOS X (followed by Proteus, and now AdiumX).
ssshhhh there is a Fire chat coming out, the only limitation on it right now is my own time. Actually there are quite a few on their way…
