Why, oh why, is there no decent bibliography software for MacOS X? It's been around for four years now, and you would've thought that someone had brought out some decent software… Obviously not.
I've been using BookEnds X 7.7.5, which is a Carbon app… and I find the interface really unintuitive and slow. I've used its temporary citation feature to put in references in my footnotes, because I was under the impression BookEnds would go through and replace those citations with the real references. Turns out it didn't do it very well, since it deleted the citation totally. I've spent the last hour or two manually going through and copying and pasting the references, adding "Op. cit."s and "Ibid."s… Ergh.
There's also EndNote, but it costs US$239.95, which is waaay too expensive for me. I don't use bibliography software that much, so it's not really worth it.
My wishlist for bibliography software on MacOS X:
- Easy to use interface
- Fast and snappy!
- Works with Word, Mellel or Nisus to add temporary citations and then find and replace them later on.
- Support a variety of bibliography and referencing formats
- Support referencing other footnotes using "Op. cit." and "Ibid.", numbering them automatically. (i.e. Footnote number 3 on page 5 is the first reference, so later the program inserts "Op. cit., n. 3 at p. 5″) (This one may be a bit hard to achieve)
- Reasonably priced
That's about it. ![]()
