Engadget: Motorola RAZR V3 Review

Engadget: Hands-on with Motorola's RAZR V3 for Cingular - Mmm… It's a pity it can't sync over Bluetooth (but can via USB), and is extremely expensive.

OmniOutliner 3 Beta

An OmniOutliner 3 beta has been released. I won't go over all the features, as they're… outlined so beautifully on the page I linked to. The current beta is only the "standard" version, but I'm looking forward to the "pro" version as well, with named styles, audio recordings and other features!

Code: Blending two colours across text

I spent a short while this afternoon solving a problem Mat set me: to have two colours and get the text in an NSTextView to blend the two colours in a gradient. The result is here. Simple to do, as well… Only about 20 lines of code (and I use lots of spacing to make things clear).

More CityRail changes…

The Sydney Morning Herald has a couple of articles today on the proposed changes to the CityRail network and timetable next year:

Basically, the North Shore line is getting shafted again, with off-peak services (10am to 2pm) being reduced to 4 services per hour (down from 8, which I swear doesn't happen anyway). A couple of other lines will have reductions, too.

According to the SMH:

The equivalent of only seven new trains will be added during peak times, but officials believe removing underutilised trains in the middle of the day will allow them to fix CityRail's disastrous performance getting commuters home.

So… how exactly will reducing the amount of off-peak trains increase the performance of the trains in peak hour? Mat brought up a point that because there is less congestion, guards and drivers will most likely be more on time when switching trains, which will in turn reduce congestion… etc. However, I don't see why reducing the trains in the middle of the day will affect peak hour, some 3 hours after the end of the off-peak period!

Will brought up the other day that we shouldn't be complaining about the lateness of the trains, but in this case, I have to disagree. The train system now is worse than what it was prior to the timetable changes last year, and has degraded severely in the last month or so. Trains meant to stop at Waverton or Pymble (the stations I usually catch trains from) routinely pass without stopping, and no explanation is given. I think if the Carr government doesn't do something drastic to the train system (other than reducing services!!!), then they're in for a shock at the next election.

Bah.

PHP Tip: Redirecting echo output

I've been designing a new theme for the blog (using WordPress 1.3), and in doing so ran into a problem where some of the WordPress supplied functions printed instead of returning the string I was interested in. One example is the comment_author() function, which prints (using echo) the author of a particular comment. I did a bit of research and eventually found a way to "redirect" the output into a variable, so I could use it in the other code.

Note: I know very little about PHP, so this is probably a very kludgy, very ineffective hack. If anyone can suggest a better solution, I'll listen!

Hopefully someone will find this of use…

Dinner Talk

I had dinner with Mum (visiting from Brisbane) and the family of a good friend (who I went to primary school with) at their place tonight, and we sat at the table tonight talking for about 2 1/2 hours straight. I realised it's something I've missed since moving out (or kicked out… it depends on your perspective ;))… We reminisced about primary school and discussed what all of our classmates were doing, where they were, and other general stuff.

While I enjoy the freedom living away from my family has given me, I also miss sitting around with my family (and friends) at the table, discussing anything and everything that tickles our fancy. Without a proper dining room (or even a dining table!), it's a bit hard to do.

Ah well…
