SMH: Drivers speed up to go with the flow (and harsher penalties)

The Sydney Morning Herald published an article last week on how many people find it acceptable to speed in order to keep up with traffic.

While this is probably true, it also mentioned that the NSW Government is going to decrease the fine for speeding up to 15 Km/h over the speed limit, but increase the number of demerit points by one (from 2 to 3). The reasoning behind this is to show that the state government isn't just trying to raise revenue.

While I'm not particularly happy with the current state government, I think this is a great idea. To many people, losing 2 demerits points out of their 12 isn't a very harsh 'punishment'. A $130 fine, while not spare change, shouldn't exactly break the bank for most people. However, if you lose 3 demerit points, you're a little bit closer to losing your license, which is important to many, many people. To put it another way, if you're caught speeding twice in when double demerit's are in place in a 3 year period, you're stuffed. It's another way to push the "speeding is bad" message, and I think it'll be reasonably effective.

In an ideal world, we would all just follow the speed limits, but there are always going to be jackasses out there that think they're super-fantasmo drivers that won't get into an accident. But… that's not the case.

As a side note, a reform I'd like to see is harsher penalties for speeding in school zones (40 Km/h). The amount of people I see hurtling through these is amazing, even when there are massive warning signs! The school zones are there for a reason (to stop kids being run over), and if a driver thinks it's OK to speed through one (in the designated times), they deserve to lose their license. I think we need better signs, though. Maybe a board that displays when a school zone is in effect (based on the time of day, whether it's a weekend, holidays, pupil-free days, etc).

Bride & Prejudice

Lucy and I saw this wonderful movie tonight. Normally, I'm not such a fan of soppy, romantic movies, but this was different.

Panic Goods Store

(It's a bit old, I know.)

Panic recently announced the Panic Goods Store, chock full of Panic paraphernalia to whet your appetite… Mat was so excited, he went out and ordered three of the t-shirts. I was one of the lucky recipients:

Panic T-Shirt

Any of the Mac users out there recognise what's on the t-shirt? You should. ;) (Hint: go and check your email in Mail.)

That's not the coolest thing, however. Cabel (from Panic) has worked some JavaScript and DHTML magic to introduce a drag-and-drop shopping cart. You simply drag whichever shirt you want to a pane at the bottom of the window to add it. Nice… When you're ready to purchase, simply hit the "Check Out" button and you'll be taken to a page with an order summary and fields for you to enter your details. If you don't want to continue with the order, just drag the items (that show up as icons), and the remaining items will shuffle along (like the Dock does) and the item will disappear with a "poof" (again, like the Dock). All in all, a very smooth process. One of the comments suggested packaging and selling the shopping cart system… I agree!

Try it out!

Ben Folds Australian Tour

Lucy alerted me to the fact that Ben Folds has a couple of concerts in Australia in April… Woo! (Now to just wait for ticketing information…)

(Hopefully) Fixed PowerBook and Windows Reflections

Retrieved my PowerBook from MacCentric in Chatswood today. They had to replace the logic board, and testing showed that it was working properly (i.e. not dying at 30% battery life). Time will tell.

I wasn't too happy about the time it took, however. I took the machine in on the 3rd February, and called last Thursday to see what was happening with it. I had expected them to have tested and perhaps ordered any parts from Apple by then, but they hadn't even gotten around to looking at it! I'm guessing they did test it soon after that, as they had replaced the logic board yesterday and tested it this morning. (I know, I'm having a whinge… but it would have been nice to know that there was a 4 to 5 day waiting time to look at the machine when I handed it in.)

It's very nice to have it back, because for the last two weeks, I've been using a Windows machine. You may think that it was bad because it was running Windows, but it was more the fact the only way I could get internet access on it was to plonk it on the carpet in the lounge room. Needless to say, my lower back is currently giving me a lot of grief, and I have been using the computer very little recently.

I installed Windows XP on the computer (an Athlon 700), and updated to SP2 once it had all been done. I was quite surprised at how (most of the time), it just worked. I liked how the Microsoft Anti-spyware application warned you if an application was installing entries into the registry or attempting to add itself to the startup items. I think it's definitely a step in the right direction. I only hope Apple has some precautions in place so that when spyware/adware does start to pop up on MacOS X, it's hard for it to be installed or function.

I didn't have any real issues with drivers and such, since I didn't really use any peripherals, but my experience was much better than I expected. However, I still missed my MacOS X setup.

Just My Luck…

I came home early from work today (Lucy and I are doing some shopping before going away for the weekend), happened to turn on the Music Max channel, which was having a "Lunch with… Jamiroquai." Woo!

So far they've shown "Blow Your Mind" (hadn't seen before), "Space Cowboy", "Emergency On Planet Earth" (hadn't seen that, either), and "Virtual Insanity" is currently playing.

It's weird to see how much Jay Kay (and the rest of the group) have changed over the years…

NYTimes opinion editorial on Guantanamo Bay

The New York Times has an opinion article on the "disgrace of Guantanamo": "The Bush administration has turned Guantánamo into a place that is devoid of due process and the rule of law. It's a place where human beings can be imprisoned for life without being charged or tried, without ever seeing a lawyer, and without having their cases reviewed by a court."

What a weekend…

Wow… what a weekend.

Lucy and I spent last night cleaning her new apartment in Paddington, and we spent today moving stuff between Cherrybrook and Paddington with Mat C. and Jane, and sorting out all the boxes and containers.

As a result, my back and hands are hurting, and I'm about ready to collapse into bed…
