Foxtel iQ

Ben told me last night that Foxtel's PVR, the Foxtel iQ. So I did a search on Technorati and found a couple of reviews of the release.

The PVR itself has a 160Gb HD (which can record 60 hours of Digital TV… not too shabby), and two tuners. That means you can watch live TV while recording another show. Nice.

I've tossed up getting a TiVo from the US for a long time now (but have been putting it off for various reasons), and could grab one and use it with our Foxtel Digital installation. However, the quality wouldn't be as good as the iQ (analog vs digital), and there aren't two tuners. Hrmmm…

However, with the iQ, there's no way to move recorded shows off the device (although I'm sure someone will come up with something), and it costs a lot. $495, to be exact ($395 + $100). You also don't get to keep the device if you cancel your Foxtel subscription. Ouchies.

Decisions, decisions…

You certainly can move recorded shows off the device… you just need to be able to use the scart out and connect it into the scart in on your DVD Recorder. I do this and have absolutely no problems at all. There is also a USB out option, but I have not tried this.

  2. 2 Jem

    Ahhh… I don’t a DVD recorder, so that makes it a bit difficult. ;)

I would have thought Foxtel would disable the USB port, or at least cripple the files with DRM, so you can’t take the shows elsewhere and distribute them over the internet (being digital and good quality). But oh well…

  3. 3 Jose

To Chris - i’ve got foxtel iq using scart out to my dvd recorder but how do you specify which program to offload from iq ? really love to know . thanks heaps .

  4. 4 Robert

I have an IQ, and very happy with it but I have about 60% of space taken up with programs I would like to keep.

I am considering buying a DVD recorder, but there are conflicting opinions on the Web about whether it is possible to transfer from IQ to DVD recorder. I am prepared to lose some quality if necessary.

Is is possible to take to DVD? How do I do it? Should I look at special specs for the DVD recorder?

  5. 5 jose

    Hi guys ,

I tried using playlist and it work for me . This is how I did it I first select the program(s) i want to transfer and select playlist . While it is playing I press record on my dvd recorder and it got copied ! . Simple solution but I got it recorded on dvd with no loss of quality .

Just make sure you have enough space on your dvd recorder .

Glad to be of help .

  6. 6 Bulldog

that allows you to “transfer” a recording simply by playing it therefore monopolising the foxtel box for the period of the recording (ie. I can’t watch foxtel while transferring my recordings.), I think most of us would be more interested if the actual files containing the recording could be moved off the HDD to any other storage medium, afaik this isn’t possible

  7. 7 ian

it looks like the thing is just a standard ide seagate drive. it could be possible to remove the drive stick it in a pc and copy… i will try it tomorrow

  8. 8 sultan

    Ian,

It seems the only significant shortcoming of IQ is the inability to move recorded data to another storage device (whether it be a PC, PVR etc…) for permanent retention, so am really interested to know the results of your trial/ experiment?

Does anyone know whether there’s any way to forego IQ as a PVR and instead run a Fox Digital STB into a HD Tuner or PVR so the issue of storage and retention is solved? I know it means losing the EPG for recording to IQ, but I guess if it’s a choice between that and the ability to keep your saved data, it seems a viable alternative. It would also allow you to record Fox as well as 7 and 10 in SD.

Will look forward to anyone’s thoughts/ experiences.

  9. 9 daniel

ian - did you end up trying the direct copy from the fox box? mine is 98% full of things I wish to keep and I desperately need to come up with a solution.

Hello I have just tried attaching the drive to my PC. The drive comes up no worries all the directories and the stored content are there BUT. The stored video is in a format with an extension .STR I have no idea what this extension is but i don’t think it’s the major problem. The major problem is that the STR files cannot be accessed. Windows simply says access denied. I tried using WMP10 and i tried copying it to my hard drive, no dice. I also tried Linux and no dice it wouldnt copy the STR files either. If any1 has any ideas or suggestions on this please let the ideas come forth.

  11. 11 Mooks

Best way to transfer is to use a capture card, capture into the pc using RCA out on the IQ Box. This way you can edit the recording once you’ve captured it on the PC. Just make sure you have as much memory & Hard Drive space as you possibly can afford. Ideally,,2048 (2GB) of RAM ,,,,Hard drive space would depend on how many Gigs has been filled on IQ Box & I am hoping you’ve got a P4 Processor or Higher.

    Hi Guys,

Give this a go to convert the .str video to whatever you need..

    Good luck..

  13. 13 Kevin

    Hi all,
Does anyone know if there is a way to change the settings so that you can tell your foxtel IQ to save to a hard drive that is connected to the USB port? maybe some way of changing settings whilst the hard drive is connected to your PC? We have the same issue as you guys, not sure what to do about it. How did you go with disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive from the box? no problwems when you booted up Foxtel IQ after you had finished? and exactly what [program from http://www.erightsoft.com did you use? Hope someone cna help…thanks guys..

  14. 14 Boltok

Hey guys, do any of you know how to convert .mp3 into .str files so i can watch music on my computer?

  15. 15 Mike

I found this program called Extract here:
    http://www.neildoh.org/Software/Extract/extract.htm

Someone in the Uk wrote it for the Sky box which is the same Pace unit as the iQ.

I haven’t tried it yet but am thinking about it - has anyone else tried it? And what about getting the drive out and back in to the iQ - is it difficult/risky?

  16. 16 anonymous

You didn’t hear this but i am a foxtel employee and i can varify that the USB port is active and that you can upload the information onto a computer hard drive it is just encrypted and you need a converter to watch the shows, i’m not going to say which one but it can be done.

  17. 17 Mike

Well if that’s the case why does my PC not even see the iQ as a device when I connect them via USB? Additionally, I’ve read on forums that other people have used USB scanning devices which can detect a signal from any USB port on any device and they say it’s totally non-operational - no signal comes from it at all according to them.

Oh, and thanks so much for not telling us which converter program to use - you’ve left the comment as anonymous so no-one can know who you are… so how about it? Or perhaps you’re a troll just having a bit of a fun at our expense?

Please prove that you’re not having a stir by giving us some useful info!

Hi All, I have found something that may be some interest to You
I have found and located how to toggle the USB Port on and off, I discovered it following these steps:
    1. I went to the TV Guide, I pressed Setup
    2. Went down to System Settings
    3. Typed in “0611″ to access installer menu via “System Details”
    4. Go to Modem settings
    5. In Modem setting toggle the internal Modem to ether USB or RS232
these settings will activate the Ports.
    6. Just use a Top-Field Driver to access.

    Thats it.

    All the best
    Reece from Pagewood, NSW

  19. 19 Mike

Thanks Reece - thanks for the info!

Have you actually managed to access the content on the iQ yet? From what I’ve read I though the USB port was only an input/host port, designed for games controllers etc.

Also what do you mean by step 6 “Just use a Top-Field driver to access”?

    Cheers, thanks again for sharing.

    Mike

  20. 20 Reece from Oz

Hi Again, A Foxtel man next door to me told me how to do this, he said we could use a Top Field driver, I was relying on some one had found a driver. I have managed to make the USB detectable by Windows XP, it comes up as Generic Serial Bus, hopefully some one has the driver so we can copy files , but I can confirm that this is how Foxtel uses these Ports, my neighbor said that they use these to Flash the ROM Version, and format/ and de-fragment the Hard disk inside and manually upgrade software via these two ports. He said you could use a Windows Communication terminal (What ever that is?)to do it.

Anyhow best of luck and report back to me if you find the driver, I will keep yanking my neighbors shirt for answers.

    All the best,
    Reece

  21. 21 Mike

I’m assuming he means a Topfield (as in the PVR’s) driver… I know they have USB ports so I can only guess that’s what he’s saying could work. It’s just a matter of *which* topfield machine he means - or maybe there is a generic driver we could try.

Anyway that is definately something to investigate - but I do think it still leaves the problem of how to decode the content… the “anonymous” guy who posted above seemed to think there was software to do it so maybe we can use the software that guy in the UK wrote for the Pace box.

BTW, Windows Communications Terminal is a program that connects you directly to another machine via a serial connection - but you have to know the specific commands to use it… although they should be findable on the net somewhere. I’m not sure XP has this built in anymore though as I just looked and I couldn’t see it in any of the Programs menus - but again, it should be on the web somewhere.

All interesting stuff… something to keep us busy on these cold winter nights!

    Mike

  22. 22 Xandegar

Tried the code/modem method and used a USB/RJ45 adapter and pluged it in… no go on that one… but the removal and use of the Extract programme, works like a charm!! Yipeee!!

  23. 23 Mike

Yeah, but have you tried doing anything with the files? I also removed the drive and copied the files off and then used Extract but his program only works with FTA channels and Foxtel here has none (except the shopping channels) - so AFAIK we’re still stuffed… to do anything with them or watch them you’ll still need to crack NDS which ain’t gonna happen anytime soon… but if there’s something you know and we don’t please do share!

I’ve decided the only method is a DVD recorder - sick of effing about with USB ports and stuff that doesn’t work… gotta say I think this one is a lost cause.

  24. 24 Thomas

So…whats the final word on this?

There seem to be a number of differing opinions… all of which appear to have been challenged or refuted one way or another.

What is THE preferred method for the removal of stored content from the IQ? By this, I mean 100% guaranteed to work.

    Cheers

  25. 25 Mike

Well, from my findings USB doesn’t work and neither does extracting the content directly off the HDD onto your PC since it’s protected by NDS… so your options are to use an S-Video or other cable to record directly to a PC by playing the programs back on the iQ or buy a DVD recorder - for me i am sick of doing it the first way so am going to buy a DVD recorder in the next few days.

  26. 26 Thomas

So, does anyone disagree that a DVD recorder with large volume storage is the preferred method?

Preferrably with the ability to burn to disc, as even the DVD recorder will eventually run out of capacity as you transfer IQ data across several times.

  27. 27 chris

    Hi ,

I tried to download the Extract software from:

    http://www.neildoh.org/Software/Extract/extract.htm

But there is no download button to download the software?

can someone please help me thanks.

  28. 28 Mike

Don’t bother - it will *not* make any content on the iQ watchable… see my posts above. The content is scrambled by NDS which is (so far) uncracked meaning the Extract software will not do anything for us. It seems that in the UK there are some FTA programs broadcast which are unscrambled - but that’s not the case here unless you want to record umpteen dozen hours of the Shopping Channel!

  29. 29 Mark
  30. 30 Mike

You’re still wasting your time… take it from someone who spent a whole day getting the drive out of his iQ and using this software to copy the programs off the drive - I repeat: unless you know how to crack NDS you are seriously wasting your time. If you can prove me wrong then I’m happy to be corrected… but I won’t be holding my breath.

  31. 31 chris

Cool no problems guys thanks for your help.

  32. 32 Mike

If it helps anyone I can thoroughly recommend the $299 MTV MDR-250 DVD recorder available from the bigger Coles stores. I got one in the weekend and so far have been *very* impressed - records to HDD or DVD really well from the iQ via component in with only very minor PQ loss. The remote is pretty horrid but for a sub-300 dollar DVD recorder you’d be hard pressed to find a better one I think.

Anyway, there is a good thread here on the unit: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=47699

    HTH…

    Mike

  33. 33 george

    Reece,

I have successfully enabled the USB using the steps you suggest. However, two things are missing from this thread:

    1) What USB cable are you using - can’t use a USB extender so I am assuming it must be a male to male Belkin or Targus data transfer cable. Specifically, which one are you using would be great.

    2) with the usb connected, will the extract program work?

Some people are saying this is possible and some people saying it is impossible - right now, after much searching on the internet I have to count myself as one of the disappointed doubters.

Mind you I am still happy with Foxtel IQ - I would have really liked to make it portable so I could watch my recorded shows on the train.

    george

  34. 34 george

    Reece,

one more question - which topfield driver specifically are you talking about?

  35. 35 Reece from Oz

Hi George, you need some kind of program called Windows Terminal or something like that, My neighbor said the cable has to be Male to male USB, then some use windows terminal. I must also clarify this what my neighbor told me, he is Foxtel Guy, to this moment I have not tried it. In regards to the driver, I think he means the Top Field PVR Windows drivers. He will tell me no more.

    I hope this helps…

    Thank you
    Reece

  36. 36 Mike

I keep telling you all - it wont work!! The programs are scrambled with NDS and the extract program does NOT work with them!!!!

  37. 37 george

yeah i have pretty much given up on this. Mike can you show me a website where you can get the MTV pvr from? I could not find any mention of it on the coles website. What’s a bigger coles store? Any in Sydney?

  38. 38 Mike

I got mine from Coles in chatswood (the one in Westfield) - don’t bother trying to find in their site, it doesn’t appear to be anywhere on it. If you go to chatswood to get it go into the store and turn sharp left and go to the customer services desk behind the checkout counters - they had them piled up on the shelf behind the counter.

    HTH…

    Mike

  39. 39 str files

one you get the str files out, you can’t do anything with them. any one got that worked out?

  40. 40 Mike

See my comments above on June 26th.

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, I will repeat myself (yet again) - the .str files from the Foxtel iQ are scrambled with NDS and that is (supposedly) totally uncrackable… so they are literally useless unfortunately. Many FTA channels in the UK are not scrambled and they are the ones that Extract works with - the program does not and can not convert scrambled recordings. And given all except one or two channels (Shopping Channel & the Racing channel AFAIK) here are scrambled this program is useless to us.

  41. 41 Barry

i have been recording programs from my iq to a dvd recorder and it works just fine for all shows apart from fox box office movies. If you try copying one of these you get a msg after 9 or so minutes saying that “record blocking signal rec’d” and the movie won’t copy anymore from that point, how frustating!! anybody else seen this?

  42. 42 mick

Is it possible to use another Sat Receiver with Foxtel, like a Topfield satellite box. Something like this

    http://www.digitalreviews.net/reviews/200407/topfield-tf5500pvr.html

  43. 43 Bulldog

I can’t help on the NDS decryption, I expect to see it beaten eventually though. I can help on the “Windows Terminal”, the program is called “Hyperterminal” in XP and can be accessed through START-ALL PROGRAMS-ACCESSORIES-COMMUNICATIONS, I use it all the time to connect to our equipment at work - thing is, all the commands are specific to the equipment, the commands I use to debug our equipment are programmed into the chips by the developers, good luck to anyone who wants to blindly stab away at the keyboard looking for a workable command list.

In response to Barry, I think that box is overkill for what you want to do, if you’re just looking to capture the output from your IQ box then a standard DVD recorder with a hard drive is enough. I’m using a HTPC at the moment, just set IQ to play the recorded shows and leave the HTPC recording for the right number of hours, then use free editing software to break it all up into seperate shows, I’m about to start playing around with some automatic ad removal software as well. If you have the time, and don’t mind getting your hands dirty then IMO a HTPC is the way to go for now.

  44. 44 Bulldog

**EDIT to above, reply was for mick, but I do have something for you Barry, you can pick up a little magic box from Jaycar that will get rid of that annoying habit of blocking recordings from certain channels. I picked mine up from Jaycar, I think they are called a “signal inverter”, they strip away the “protected content” signal and allow you to record whatever you want. I can post the exact model number later if anyone is interested enough to ask.

  45. 45 chris

    hey,

can you please post the model number of the signal converter please and also the name of the signal converter and the price thankyou

  46. 46 george

    Bulldog,

ditto to what chris just said .. that information would be extremely helpful

    please and thank you.

  47. 47 Bulldog

Here is the exact model I’m using, seem to remember it being right on $100 when I picked it up about 18mths ago - it’s gone up since then.

Here’s a direct link to the product page on Jaycar

    http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=AR1822&CATID=&keywords=&SPE

They’re calling it an NTSC to PAL converter, I’ve used it to record from Box Office and Main Event channels, just for experimentation of course.

  48. 48 Jonels

Can someone please HELP!!. I’m not techno-know-how as most of you guys on this forum…but need your help! We’ve moved house that had foxtel satelite and now live in one that has cable. We will be having a technician coming out in a couple of weeks to install. The box we have is IQ for satellite from our old place. After talking with foxtel, we were told that the IQ satelite box will be taken with the technician, as we will need a IQ box for cable. PROBLEM!!!…I wan’t to record all the programs I have saved on the IQ satelite box to dvd. Lots of NBA stuff. Would of done it at our old place before moving but thought we’d just be using the same box !! Very confusing!!

Now that I am in my new place, which has cable running through it…but not connected to foxtel yet….Would I be able to record/transfer all the programs thats in the IQ satelite box onto dvd without it being connected and activated to foxtel signal?? Like..could I just turn the IQ box on and try and retrieve the programs some how before the technician comes to instal foxtel via cable. Would appreciate some guidance!

  49. 49 Mike

Sorry, to my knowledge your only option is to buy/rent/steal a DVD recorder for a couple of weeks or to record (in real time) to a PC by attaching via an s-video cable and audio cables and using a piece of 3rd party software (such as iuVCR).

I recently had the same experience (moving house and going from satellite to cable) and I gave up on the other method and got a $299 DVD recorder (see my comments on this above if you decide to do that, Coles actually sell a couple of great units for very good prices.)

Sorry we can’t help you - as I said above, that’s the exact problem everyone one here wants to solve!

  50. 50 Jonels

Hi Mike!!…Thanks for that!!. We bought a dvd recorder earlier this week….and we downgrading back to normal foxtel digital…sick of all the dramas with IQ when you move!. So sorry bout sounding useless!!…but are you able to talk me through how to copy the programs from my satelite IQ box to dvd recorder! We bought a Samsung DVD-VR330/VCR Recorder. The manual isn’t that clear and I’m pretty clueless with working IQ. I rung foxtel to ask for advice, but they told me that I had ABSOLUTELY NO WAY of recording my programs on the IQ box to a dvd recorder because the IQ box needs to receive satelite signal!! Hmmmm!!!! they also said that because my place has cable….I won’t be able to get into it all…even when the technician comes to install foxtel!!…and he will take the box!! The only helpful thing the foxtel guy said was that I could perhaps take my IQ box to someone I may know who has foxtel IQ satelite and hook my box up on their satelite and try to retrieve and record my programs that way…but he did say he wasn’t too sure whether my box will activate on their satelite connection and account. Bloody hell!!

Is there hope?? Is there a way of retrieving and recording my programs in the satelite IQ box onto DVD WITHOUT this satelite signal that foxtel guy was going on about???

    Oh Please!!!…I hope there is!!!!!

  51. 51 Mike

Well it’s hard to say - certainly when I copied the stuff off my iQ it was still connected to the Foxtel satellite service. I’ve never tried disconnecting the coax cable to see if I could still access the programs so I wouldn’t know and I’m away on holiday at the moment so can’t test it sorry - maybe someone else can do it and post back here.

To record from the iQ I use a SCART cable from the video out to a component input on the dvd recorder and audio cables from audio-out on the iQ to audio-in on the recorder. You then go to the program on the iQ (which is perhaps where you need the connection to the service), select the program to play it as normal then start recording from the DVD recorder. Most DVD recorders allow you to edit the ads out later so I never bother sitting around pausing the iQ during the (too frequent) ads, I just do it afterwards asit’s so easy to do on my DVD recorder.

Hope this helps somewhat - good luck. Oh, and don’t listen to what Poxtel say - there are ways to get around everything (ok, except NDS maybe).

    Mike

  52. 52 Harvies

hey hey im a harvies tech and im constantly stabbing away at a college who is an installer these guys know nothign they only install the units u need to actually know a pace rep which i have stabbed away at as well the files them selves are not encrypted any one here use linux or unix the files and o/s on the pace machines is of unix design and you can by pass the starter program first 35 lines of the file and last 52 lines of code with in unix we have film clips of the foxtel iq on dvd without use of the recorder method but unfortunatly you do need to rip apart your unit there is a rom onboard that supports upto 320gb for those who want more space whack a new drive in or rig up a cradle for swap method whilst unit powerd down of course it works

  53. 53 cath

I will be trying to copy to a DVD recorder this week. Hope it works. Will let you all know.I too have a lot of good movies I’d llike to keep and therefore want to copy to DVD. From reading all these entries the DVD recorder seems to be the most straoght forward way to go - on paper anyway - we’l see.

  54. 54 Fots

    Hi Guys,

Has anybody tried to copy programs from IQ to DVD without being connected to Foxtel? I’m in a similar pickle to Jonel’s. Any luck Mike?

    Can anybody offer any advice?

    thanks

  55. 55 T.H.O.R

I found the software to read the files straight from disk..just need to buy another USB to IDE converter ($20) so I copy them without actually connecting the drive to an IDE cable (we dont want XP phucking up the drive when it’s connected). I use a USB to IDE converter because that way the drive is treated like a removable USB key.

Will be using Extract and Project X which were designed for the IQ box in Britain which just happens to be the same model which Foxtel use.

    see here for details: http://neildoh.org/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=4

  56. 56 Mike

    >I found the software to read the files straight from disk.

Yes, so did I, about 3 months back.

And if you’d bothered to read back a bit on this blog you will have seen that myself and others have tried Extract and it only works for non-encrypted shows of which we have almost none of here - unless you happen to like hours of recordings from the racing channel or the shopping channel that is.

It certainly works in that it extracts the programs from the iQ’s HDD but they are just garbled crap due to the encryption Foxtel puts on them here. Also, if you read Neildoh’s site carefully you will see he refers to this on his website… it only converts unencrypted “free” broadcasts of which there are quite alot in the UK beucase the BBC is owned by the government and most of the FTA stuff is broadcast by them.

So for the umpteenth time - sorry but this will not work…. unless you know something that I don’t at which point I will be very happy to be proved wrong!!

  57. 57 FoxJunkie

Any word on this? Has a crack for the encrypting been found yet??

  58. 58 selfactualise@gmail.com

People interested in “obtaining” (not buying/selling) please contact me and place your “request” (not order/invoice) and I will give it to you for “free”* (SOME CONDITIONS APPLY including signing non-disclosure-agreement if you want the source code as this is built on Microsoft’s Windows/NT source. Anyway, I am just making disclaimers under the reverse engineering clause of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act - and thus not committing a crime. Anyway, I have modded a Xbox version 1.00 and added in satellite modulator plugs and built a XBE - a Xbox executable - so the whole machine emulates a PACE FOXTEL IQ - and with no ENCRYPTION whatsoever - I mean you can link it to your PC either over USB, RS232, or SCSI, - and do whatever you want - and cryto wise there is NOTHING.

  59. 59 redwood nine

Has anyone tried any of these PVR drivers to see if you are able to connect it up and access the files on the foxtel disk?

  61. 61 Mike Hunt

Hey has anyone tried using a usb video capture maker?

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-USB-Video-Audio-Capture-Adapter-Card-DVD-VCD-Maker_W0QQitemZ330202897859QQihZ014QQcategoryZ111509QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

what it does is put the coaxial outputs from the foxtel box (IQ or otherwise) into a usb port in a pc or laptop and comes with the software to save the stream as .avi or whatever you want really. This will allow you to record what you want off the box and free up more space on the IQ hard disk. Does anyone know if this works?

I think I’m going to get one off ebay to check it out.

Will let you know how I go

  62. 62 Mike Hunt

Sorry I was just thinking that ebay link is only going to last a few days…
Here is a more permanent link http://www.usbgear.com/CTX-002.html

  63. 63 Mike

Sounds interesting - let us know if it works!

  64. 64 Mike Hunt

    Wow, finally some good news!

I can record the input and save as mpeg or avi or whatever, and I can choose the picture size etc, and choose compression. I recorded 59 seconds of miami ink to a .avi file and it took up 1.5gb! but i can change the compression or compress after.

The only problem is the sound, for some reason I can only record picture as tv input, or sound as microphone input, not both together.. :( Bit i’m thinking if I get the one off ebay from Hong Kong it has only usb on the pc side of the device and it says it captures video and audio through the usb cable. Is this crap or not? Can somebody with a bit more knowledge let me know before I purchase a useless paperweight from ebay

  65. 65 Mike Hunt

Ok hang I take that all back, It works fine. :)
I can record to my laptop as a mpeg-2 or avi with audio, Yay! Finally a solution

Pleased that worked for you! How did you get it working though - with one of those cables you linked to above or via s-video and audio cables as others of us have also done?

There is a post on here way back where I talk about having success recording (in real time) to a PC by attaching via an s-video cable and audio cables and using a piece of 3rd party software (such as iuVCR). However, I found any program longer than about 60-75 mins would start losing audio synch which was very annoying. Finally I just bought a $299 MTV 250GB DVD recorder from Coles and now I use that which makes excellent recordings.

Foxtel are releasing the HD iQ in April (according to the Foxtel engineer I had at my place just a few days ago) so maybe, just maybe, they’ll enable the USB port - but somehow I doubt it.

I used one of the cables in the link above, its just a matter of playing with the settings in the recording program provided with the cable. Picture is fine and loads of settings are available, and sound has to be set to line in for it to sync with the picture, and there are loads of sound settings too.

I didn’t use the s-vid cable just the red white and yellow composite, the cable is available for about 35 inc postage from hong kong. I pretty cheap soultion, as long as your pc or laptop meets the requirements and you have sufficient hard disk space etc.

I’ve been using the PC based capture cards for a while now, it’s not ideal but “slightly” better than using the DVD recorder in that I don’t need to record straight to disk and after capture the file can be manipulated and edited to your hearts content. Results vary, but the newer cards I have used tend to be built around digital content with analogue inputs a secondary consideration and the quality ranges from fair to poor. DScaler seems to be the program of choice for most, my HTPC is in pieces right now but I’m getting the IQ HD installed next week so I might drag it out and put it back together again.

If anyone has a link to some of the more interesting info on the IQ HD would love to have a read of it.

I have a Foxtel IQ. I have a tv tuner in my pc. There is 2 outlets on the back of the IQ, using standard male/female tv coax cable.
I’ve hooked it up, tune it in on my pc & play the recorded program on the IQ & record it on to my pc. I then convert to XviD & back it up on my harddive & disc.
Don’t know if any of you have tv tuners etc on your pc’s, but I have found that the most simple, cheapest & easiest way to do it!

Hope that helps all of you???!!!
