MacBook Pro battery problems

While I've largely been quite happy with my MacBook Pro, recently some pesky little gremlins have started to appear (and old ones have persisted):

  • If the machine runs out of battery, it shuts off completely, rather than going to sleep (let alone a deep sleep)
  • Over the weekend, the laptop spontaneously lost a large chunk of its battery charge in a second (and shut off - see above). Apparently this is a known problem with certain early model batteries (Forum thread)
  • … and it keeps on whining when not on full brightness (or when the screen dims)

I gave Apple Support a call tonight, reported the serial number and problem, and the guy refused to acknowledge the problem over the phone, instead telling me to take the computer to an Apple Service Provider and get them to diagnose and fix it. FFS! Apple KNOWS it's a problem, and even has a list of serial numbers affected by (potentially) defective batteries. Ship me a replacement battery, already! I don't have time to hand my computer over to a repair shop and lose it for a week, when my thesis proposal is due in just over that.

Keep the MacBook plugged into a wall and you wont notice the issues therefore allowing you to finish your thesis work. Then get it fixed before WWDC. :)

Well that’s one way of approaching it, but what if I had to… errr… depart from my desk for a short while, thus requiring the un-plugging of said power? Out of luck, then, aren’t i? :)

I suggest that you just get a Lenevo ThinkPad - there are no issues that I am experiencing with this beast of a machine - 2GB Ram, 300GB’s on board and a 512mb vid card, it will leave your little Apple for dead

  4. 4 Jeremy Higgs

300GB? Really? That must be some super-secret IBM hard disk technology, because I’m not aware of any notebook hard disks that size.

That 2GB of RAM must be some sneaky “phantom” RAM, because the ThinkPad can only take up to 1GB, and the video card is 256mb, not 512mb. (ThinkPad Product Page)

    BANG!

I upgraded everything myself. I bought the parts for super cheap @ msy and i put it all together. Come on mate, you can’t possibly have got me. U think it only supports up to 1GB, heh, like my w800i only supports a 1GB memory stick ;)

    Hi Jeremy,

it’s a small world (I also used to be a BIT @ UNSW).

In response to your problems, the only thing that I would say is that Apple is not known for giving out information … any information!

In fact I know that a few members of their Australian public relations department have in the past lost their jobs through telling journalists tiny little itsy bits of info.

Good luck with the MacBook, ours here at ZDNet has had a few issues so I think I’ll pass on buying one for a year or so myself ;)

I have a 13″ black MacBook that is 5 weeks old. I took it on a road trip last week only to discover that the machine does not recognize its battery (not convenient at 30,000 feet on an airplane where you cannot plug in to AC power). I called Apple, they had me reset the P-RAM (which I had already done but did again to humor them) and said they’d send me a new battery this week. I had to leave a credit card number because they want my old battery back (they’re paying the shipping).

Well guys, I’m from brazil and just had the same problem: my Macbook pro doesn’t recognizer It’s battery anymore. I bought over a month and this battery just stop working. Is that a software problem?? Dou you guys know any way to help me out??

    Thanks!

I’d take it back to an Apple Centre and get it replaced. There’s an official recall on certain batteries/machines at the moment, so it’s probably best to get it checked out there.

Apple have an exchange battery program in place. Visit this page to sign up for a replacement delivered to you in a few days directly from Apple.

    https://support.apple.com/macbookpro15/batteryexchange/index.html

We have several MBPro’s all from the first batch. They all have the battery problem. However, if Apple will sort the problem out fast and efficiently then that’s fine. Life’s too short to grumbel, nobody is perfect etc. etc. It’s better to just get on with the job and look with a positive view that at least the back up service is there.

Smile. The day is not so bad afterall!

I have no idea how this happened. I left my MacBook on my desk for 3 days in sleep mode (i think), came back home, lifted it up to move it to another room and found a liquid square shape outline where the battery was positioned. I smelled it - kind of chemical like. Took the battery out…….some liquid on the inside……….>>>>>>>>>Thoughts?

Uh, I’d take it to an Apple repair centre ASAP. Definitely not good if the battery is leaking!

i had the same macbook problem as other commenters… after being drained completely (by accident), it would not turn on, and i plugged it in, and it had an X over the battery meter. i let it try and charge overnight, no luck. i took it out, did the classic apple battery trick of hooking up a power source to completely drain it (i hooked up a case fan), and they didn’t even spin, this thing was 100% dead. even resetted the PRAM (which started causing the lines problem, but after getting into mac os x, upgrading to 10.4.8, and resetting the display resolution, i haven’t had the problem since)… none of those worked. i was driving from tallahassee to los angeles and had to keep it plugged in the whole time. we stopped at the apple store in houston and they replaced it immediately (instead of having it shipped) because it had a small bulge, which i didn’t notice.

the new one worked fine for a week and a half, but now it just turned with an X again, but i reset it and now it works fine. i just think that apple didn’t pay much attention to their power management with the intel switch.

I started having battery problems as well with my 15″ MacBook Pro, purchased in January delivered in March…

I have found that the battery suddenly drains and shuts down for no reason if certain applications are open. One way around this is to start on the AC then disconnect the power supply.

I also am having some battery issues with my blackbook.. also on a road trip down in Morocco and far from any apple stores etc. After picking up my computer after a long drive it would not turn on so I connected it to AC supply and tried and it turned on ok but does not recognize its battery anymore. Also the Amber to Green light on the magnetic plug shows green which normally suggests it is fully charged however as soon as it is unplugged it dies and on the battery icon on the top of the desktop it shows an X..If anyone has found any more on site remedies I would be very happy to hear and try them… I never had a bit of trouble with my old Ti book so hope this lovely new all singing unit is not a glitchy queen.. Thanks for your time..

    Bertie - Snap.

My MB 13″ Black doesn’t recognize the battery anymore and is the AC plug is stuck on green.

I’ve reset the SMC as per the instructions on the website but no change.

After a 45 minute wait on hold for Applecare they have told me that they will send a new battery.

It’s only 4 months old and has needed a new RAM module, new keyboard and now a new battery. Any ideas what will go next…

  20. 20 Chele

bought a macbook pro 17″ over a couple months ago..in the past few days, complete shutdown at 70%, recharges to 100% then as soon as remove power supply it drops at the rate of knots.
Also noticed a slight bulge on the exterior of the battery wall…this was an early birthday present for me, I am a professional photographer and need this for my work…didnt expect to have to deal with all these problems..and so soon.

have reset the battery and done disk repair checks..any ideas anyone. b4 i contact apple.

  21. 21 Tina

I’m in the same boat as you. I just purchased a MacBook Pro 17″ and received it about 1 month ago. My battery said it was at approx 68% (unplugged), and then all the sudden it was off, dead. I could only restart it with it plugged in. Did you find the cause? So typical of Apple that it’s only 1 month old and has problems.

Thanks for you help in advance.

  22. 22 Jeremy Higgs

If it helps at all, I took it to an Apple repair centre and got a new battery. Haven’t had any problems since!

  23. 23 Nick

I just Google’d for my MacBook Pro’s battery problem and stumbled upon this. Thanks for the reference in the comments! Just called Apple support and they are shipping me my new battery soon. Thanks!

    Hi Jeremy:

Happened across your site and saw the post from “Will”. Will the PC trollers never end?

I’m adding my voice to the woester chorus. My new MacBook Pro is shutting down when not on AC. I’m really busy with work and school and of course disappointed to have to schedule time to fix it. You pay big bucks for these things and it’s just disappointing when they have problems right at the outset.

    hello..
i have the same problem with my battery.. my 1 month old black macbook wont recognize or charge the battery.
called mac and now they are sending me a new battery, wich seems to be the common solution.. however i cant seem to find any commentary to judge if this actually works! someone please reply to my comment or email me or something and tell me if replacing your battery does the trick.

Here you go: The 15″ MBP Battery Replacement Program:

    https://support.apple.com/macbookpro15/batteryexchange/index.html

  28. 28 don

Great site. After reading I called Apple regarding my MBP 17″ that started shutting down at random while on battery. The unit was manufactured back in May ‘06, and has already had the system board replaced under warranty due to firmware mishap. Getting that done was a pain, as I needed to keep my physical hard drive in my possesion (I work in Gov’t) while the unit was shipped. I finally found an authorized service center locally that helped me out by switching the drive with a new empty one long enough to repair. This was after rounds on the phone and a trip to the local “genius” ending in nothing but frustration over “protocol”.

This time, no hassle. Apple shipped me a new battery as soon as I called AppleCare, here next day. Here is hoping all is well again.

  29. 29 Adam Schokora

Yes, having this problem now….have removed the battery — leaving it in place essentially disables my touchpad/click.

I am based in Shanghai, anyone else had this issue and resolved it (for free) in town? If so, please drop me an email at adam.schokora@gmail.com

    Thanks,

    AjS

  30. 30 Humberto Ramirez

Terribly disappointed with this battery issue, had the original battery replaced in mid February and now it is doing the same thing….suddenly drops out of power completely and battery health is down to 24 % after a month and a half!!!!!!!!!!!
Come on Apple what’s going on?

  31. 31 Troy

Same problem. Battery doesn’t charge…..computer doesn’t work without it being plugged in. Computer doesn’t recognize battery connection. X on battery icon. Lame. However, to boot, the bottom casing cracked on the front edge. I guess it was from stress and heat. Anybody want a relitively new macbook.

  32. 32 Ed Clark

I have the same problem, but my battery is NOT included in Apple’s recall. The laptop started powering off whenever it became unplugged, even though the battery was at 100% charge. The most recent software update that fixed power problems (April-May 2007) helped for a while, but now I’m back to the same issue.

A further note: I was recently in India writing my thesis, and the power goes out briefly every hour or so in both Delhi and Bangalore. This means that the Mac powered off every time, to the point that I went back to pen and paper!!!!

  33. 33 tsNoah

Anyone think this is a battery terminal issue? My 15″ MBP wont turn on without being plugged in however I have had some luck by pushing the battery in while turning on.

  34. 34 Manish

I have a MBP 15 inch. I have the same issue- similar to one of the earlier posters, I have had the batter replaced- once under recall and once while it was still under warranty for this same problem. I went to one of the apple stores and they told me that the battery was the issue- I specifically asked if they thought that maybe the MBP was causing the battery to fail- they said nope. I am not under warranty anymore and the thought of paying for another battery thats just going to get fried is killing me.

  35. 35 Sankar

Same problem, Googled and stumbled here. And it usually happens for me when the battery is like 60-70% full everytime. Even my mac book pros battery serial number is not there in the apple’s website for taking back.

  36. 36 Beth

    Hi Everyone-
I’m having the same problem. Battery is charged at 100%. Full life on meter on back. MBP shuts down unless connected to power source and won’t restart until I plug it back in.
Checked the battery and it’s not on the recall.
    Any ideas?
Just moved and now I’m several hours away from the nearest apple store!

  37. 37 Austin

    add me to the list,

    - MacBook Pro 15″
    - Under 4 months old
    - Battery reads 98% & not charging
    - Battery lights show full charge
    - Will not power up without power cord
    - Turns off if power is removed
    - Coconutbattery (program) says battery is at 77% of original capacity a big drop from 98% a week ago

Purchased in Melbourne, Australia and will try my french with the mac dealer here in Paris..

I’ll post on how it goes..

  38. 38 Beth

    Here’s my update:
I called apple support and they mailed me a new battery, free of charge on the condition that I send the old one back to them. Good as new!

  39. 39 Dave Anderson

    Hey guys

My Macbook battery died, 2 weeks out of warranty. I assumed it was the battery that was the problem…i pushed the button on the battery and it just flashed up as dead.

I purchased a new one, and this worked for a week, and now whenever I take the AC plug out it shuts down. The battery button says it’s charged and working ok so it must be the machine.

My last Powerbook died a month out of warranty, I have replaced this Macbook already once, and now this. Whilst I’ve grown to love the Mac interface I’m over putting up with crap reliability.

  40. 40 Daniela Ochoa

    hello

so here is my story, once again, same problem with the battery and the black X, I took it to an apple center here in Guayaquil, Ecuador which is where I’m located and they told me they will replace the battery but the shipping would take TWO WEEKS! because they have to send it from the States. Bummer…this was last week.
But then today, I turned on my macbook as usual with the power cord on cause otherwise it would’t turn on, and suddenly the awful black x dissapeared and the green light in the power cord turned amber, so I guessed “problem solved!” but it has been 5 hours since that moment and the battery apparently is still charging at this moment so the light is still amber and when I unplugg it, the computer does not shuts downs anymore but the battery life is really poor and while charging it appears as if its on the 99 percent of the charge, so …..I’m lost already, can’t figure out what happened or what’s going to happen next! help!…suggestions!….anything!

  41. 41 austin

    my update,

took the mac in an explained the problem, he checked the green lights were at full charge and then tried to boot it up which spoke for itself when it died halfway through that annoying mac sound at the start.
i had a new battery in about a week. the mac store is the one just outside & accross the road from the pompidou centre in Paris, very quick and helpful.

now my new battery has actually increased a bit after use, so it will only charge up to 97% but has more capacity than before so 97% is 3 hours.

my advice to anyone with battery problems under warranty is,
1- get coconutbattery, so you can see what the battery is doing.
2- go in to the shop and DO NOT leave without having a new battery being sent to the shop for you. whatever it takes.. whatever stories you can think of.. smells/heat/anything. if you have any problems at all it should be replaced.
3- try not to use your mac on the power cord when the battery is gone (the shop must keep it) as sometimes the power source is not constant and the mac makes some pretty horrible noises and screen patterns if it doesn’t get enough power.

    good luck!

  42. 42 austin

oh my battery was not in the recalled serial numbers

  43. 43 dan

Have the same problem. 70% battery power causes shut down. Piece of crap.

  44. 44 Evgeny Khanin

I left my MacBook Pro for several days in sleep mode. It doesn’t wake up any more. The battery has no charge, and it doesn’t charge when I plug in the power cord.

  45. 45 flikk

As of today, my MacBook and I have been together for 40 days. Yesterday, while I was happily surfing (on battery), it powered down with no warning. Okay, these things happen. I plugged it in, restarted, and all seemed to be fine. Battery was about 70%. I did other things and when it was about 90%, unplugged it and everything was good. This morning after using it unplugged for 1.5 hours it did the same thing, but decided to only work with the power adapter, not on battery alone. When trying to boot without AC, it would try to spin the CD and then fall back into off. I made an appt with the Apple store (Fashion Show Mall, Las Vegas) for 3:20pm. I got there right at 3:20pm and the monitors showed I was 5th in line. Store was fairly packed, at least one patron at every display item. They also said the next MacGenius appt. was “approx. 8:30pm.” Glas I made an appt. I was served about 15 min. later, during which time the monitors had changed to “No more MacGenius appts. available today, please try tomorrow.” Once I explained the issue, my Genius tried one of his batteries, and computer worked fine. So he said “No problem, I’ll have you out of here in 10 minutes.” He got me a brand new battery, tested it, and put my old one in a box on the rear counter with four others. So this is a very common problem, and one that Apple has tried to deal with as pianlessly as possible for the consumer. My Genious did ask if the Battery had an “X” in the icon bar, and I said no. Just wouldn’t run on battery. On the way out of the store, one of the 3 MacBooks, in fact the one closest to the door, has an “X” on the battery icon. When I unplugged the power, it shut down immediately. The moral of the story is to contact Apple immediately with problems and give them a chance to fix them. Hope this helps others.

  46. 46 Paul Alves

Same here, boys and girls. Didnt use the Macbook yesterday as I went to a Leafs game and got pretty hammered. Come home today, and the macbook will NOT power on without AC power cord attached, as soon as I remove it, the damn thing just dies.

Battery showing 100% charge, green light on AC cord but my macbook will not function any more as a portable computer.

Im going to Apple store, in Toronto tommorow and demanding a new battery. I will not leave the store without one.
    :)

  47. 47 Michael Tuminello

same here. it says fully charged in all cases (OSX menu indicator, istat pro, coconut battery), but as soon as I unplug it, it just shuts down.

It was working fine until tonight. this just happened out of the blue.

  48. 48 Steve

I’m in this big boat of ours aswell. My MBP 15battery decided not to work, at all, anymore. I’m from Sydney Austrlia. So i’ll be going to my local macstore and hopefully getting a new battery. I’ll let you know how I go, for all you other aussies reading this. :)

  49. 49 Richard

Same here! Shuts down with power unplugged, battery icon showing “(Charged)”. FYI: load MacTheRipper prior to issue.

  50. 50 Michael

    Same problem…

Macbook Pro shuts down -does not go to sleep- when fully charged and unplugged for just 5 minutes. Serial number is not included in those described on Apple’s website. There is no Apple Centre nearby and I can’t afford the time or expense to get to one. I need my Mac for my university disertation and later for my thesis.

I accept products can fail, but am not happy at all with Apple’s lack of action. We should be able to return these dead batteries via post/website, and without having to go Apple Centre or spend hours on the phone (as I have had to for previous items which they *eventually* replaced).

Have been Mac user since the Classic, and have purchased many different models through the years. I have also got many other people to buy them. But this kind of denial and unhelpful attitude from Apple (also re other problems with Apple products) is going a long way towards changing that. I am very pro Mac. Please Apple, don’t make me have to change.

  51. 51 eric

wife just bought a new macbook, i turned it on to look at see the display, it wants me to go through set up. i’m not ready to that yet, it would not let me shut it down. i just shut the lid, i read manuel, i have it in sleep mode, she is taking a class in the morning at apple, she will set up after that. will this harm the notebook to leave in sleep mode for next 24 hours? I do not have the battery plugged in.

  52. 52 Lauren Goldstein

I believe to have received a “lemon” macbook black– 1st gen., purchased with school loan I’ll be paying off for the next 10 years. Apple is pretentious if I call them, and is not willing to help me out because I am a college grad student who could not afford the $300 apple care plan.
The battery showed an X over it last year. They sent me a replacement. Now, as I am try to complete my thesis, the new battery also has failed (X–with no amber light on magsafe plug). The unit had RSS (Random system shutdown) when the computer would just turn off. The screen cracked–a little tiny line in the corner at first, then with use, took over the whole screen. No damage from me, it just happened with normal use.
Now, all of my utility files are missing except Adobe. The computer was dead on battery for a week over break when I was out of town and I returned to find those files missing. Unable to play dvds , do firmware updates, charge battery…anything.
As a long time mac user (through high school, college, grad school) and first-time buyer, I am appalled at the service Apple provides.
Through various message boards I have seen the numerous defects that Apple obviously knows about. Disgusting.
Bought Leopard, waiting for Time Capsule to arrive so I can back up and hopefully save the computer.
    Any thoughts, comments, suggestions?
Thanks and sorry for the long post. Lauren

  53. 53 Tyson

This is a long post but I’d like to explain my own experience, which in some ways has differed from those mentioned above.

I had my Macbook Pro for about 6 months and wasn’t having any trouble with it, but my battery was covered by the recall so I went ahead and got a replacement just to avoid problems later on. Well, the new battery worked fine for another 4 months or so but then suddenly started giving me instant shutdowns while still around 40%. It has just gotten worse and worse, to the point that it can be charged 100% but when I unplug it starts dropping at a rate of about 10% every 3-5 minutes. THEN it’ll die at around 70%.

As for the LED light in the magsafe connector, after the battery has died, the light remains green and has a very faint, steady flicker or “tick” to it. It will continue to do this for anywhere from 5 minutes to THREE HOURS, during which time the system will not power on (or if it does it’ll usually die before fully booted).
Once the magsafe light finally turns amber, everything is good to go again.

One important detail I noticed about this is when the magsafe light is flickering, there is a very faint “ticking” sound coming from underneath the keyboard that corresponds to the flicking of the light. I don’t know what’s under there but if I had to guess, it sounds like there could be a relay that’s supposed to switch between AC or battery and it’s getting stuck and switching back and forth rapidly until something warms up. The longer I leave the laptop unplugged from AC power (even when it’s powered off completely) the longer it takes for the magsafe to start charging the battery again.
The system detects that the adapter is connected but states that the battery is NOT charging.

This is becoming such a widespread problem, I almost feel that Apple should take care of it, regardless of warranty because there is obviously a hardware defect involved here. My laptop is currently useless as a portable because I can’t even unplug it for 5 minutes or it’ll die.

  54. 54 Ivy

I have been experiencing similar problems with my Macbook. I just googled to search for some answers and found this forum. I completely agree with everyone’s statements. My macbook is just over a year old, so is no longer under manufacturer’s warranty. I’m a college student, so I could not afford to get the applecare protection plan. I believe I got a lemon of a macbook as well; when it was just three months old, little green pixels started appearing on my screen. Shortly after, my computer would not turn on. Since it was still under warranty at the time, I was able to send it in to apple and they replaced the power source. What was supposed to be a few day’s repair grew to be almost two months, and since I left the country to go home (Taiwan) on my summer vacation, I did not have my computer for about three months. When I finally got back, I found that they had replaced my keyboard with an American keyboard. This upset me because my keyboard had been in perfect working condition so there was no reason for them to replace it, and the American keyboard obviously does not have the Chinese characters that I use to type in Chinese. They also removed my extra ram (which was installed when I bought the computer at an authorized Apple reseller) and did NOT return it to me. Everytime I called Apple I was put on hold for at least 40 minutes and kept getting transferred to two or three different people even though I had a case number and repair number they could easily reference. In the end, they were unable to return my keyboard with Chinese characters on it, so I had to settle for the one they gave me. It took them another two months to finally return my ram to me. They had also wiped out my entire hard drive, because that is what those idiots do whenever they encounter a problem: easy solution, just wipe out the entire computer and re-install OSX. It’s the dummy way out because they’re not actually diagnosing the problem, but just using the easiest method they know of to make your computer work. Also, they never fixed the broken/green pixels on my screen, but at that point, the entire process had taken nearly five months, so I was not about to send it back.

Now, I am experiencing problems with either the logic board, or the battery because my computer will suddenly shut down when not plugged in to the power source and will not start up. It works perfectly when it is plugged in, but this renders my computer entirely unportable, which really defeats the purpose of having a laptop. This is a really unforunate time for me to be having these issues, because I am currently in the process of writing my thesis (and all of my data was on my computer, which I thankfully, managed to plug in to the power source and back up before anything else happened to it). I’m also leaving to TA at Princeton in about a week, during which I really need to use my laptop. I’m at a loss about what to do, since my computer is no longer under warranty, and whatever repairs they make will probably cost more than it is worth. At this point, I may as well get a new one, except that I don’t have any money to do that. If I do, it will be the third apple laptop that I have owned in the course of three years, which is ridiculous. I really love apple products and have been a devoted mac user ever since I got to college and had my first laptop, but the customer service and bad experiences with repairs has really discouraged me from continuing to use their products. I hope I don’t have to switch back to PCs, but I feel all out of luck with macs right now. I have an appointment at the genius bar today, so hopefully they will be able to help me.

I have had two “top of the line” mac laptops and they blow suck. Sure the performance is great, and the OS is great, but that has nothing to do with the “laptop-ness”. Both my TiBook and my MacBook Pro suffered from sleep problems. Both of their batteries sucked. Both of them were too flimsy in construction.

I believe that this is because corners are cut to meet cost, design and demand issues that large corporations face. If you got a macbook pro that was rock solid and could never break, it would cost a lot more.

I bought a pelican case for my lappy that keeps it from getting crunched whenever I travel. I also bought a really nice backpack for it for when I’m riding my bike to keep it safe. I try to always shut it down properly. I’ve had to send my apples off for repair. I’ve done a million PRAM zaps, SMC resets, verbose restarts and the like. All of these things annoy me, but it’s the cost of owning a mac. You learn to deal with it.

If you want a better laptop, build your own; or better yet start a new Apple so we can all buy one! ;)
[For the pirate in you, there is a hacked version of OS X that one can run on a PC if you are willing to break a few copyright laws and aren't afraid of learning something. However, with this route you sacrifice regular updates as they break your system so you are sort of "frozen in time". If you want to proceed, you need to check out the guys on the IRC channels to get real help if you get stuck.... I've heard.]

I have a MAcbook Pro 15″ with Duo Core 2.2Ghz P, 4gigs of Ram and a 120g HD. I am beyond pissed off with it. I am a freelance designer and student with a brick of a computer to work with. I just got it back from Apple and they say they replaced my logic board. My computer will not turn on and the green light on the battery flashes rapidly with the small LED on the cord orange colored. I had similar issues when trying to get information from apple support. All they want me to do is take it into the store. And like Jeremy that is just not a big option. That means I’m out of work for another week and I have to stay at school to do my math and write papers. What will apple do when everyone finally realizes that they aren’t as cool as we thought!

wow. looks like I’m not the only one who’s had battery/logic board problems with the MacBook Pro. I got one of the first generation macbook pro’s … you know when they were brand new and you had to order them online before they were even in stores… Anyway a few months after I had it the battery expanded and eventually the machine wouldn’t turn on. I took it to the local Apple store and they replaced it right away. I thought all was well… NOPE!! a few months after I got it replaced I was listening to some music on itunes and next thing I know the song starts skipping, so I tried to turn the computer off and nothing. held the power key down for 10 seconds… still nothing. finally I unplugged the battery and then plugged it back in. when I went to turn the computer on it went to the start up screen and started skipping again. I took it into the local MacDocs and the logic board is fried. which would’ve cost me 600-800 bucks to fix. So finally I decided that I’d much rather just get a newer, faster macbook for a few hundred dollars more than it would cost to fix the one I have.

I’m wondering if the battery problems are linked to the fried logic board problems later down the road. And if so… Apple is shady for not addressing this issue!! if you’re going to sell a product make sure it’s not going to break down every few months eventually rendering the thing useless, forcing the person who owns it to buy a completely new computer.

Having the same problems… green on the magnetic power adapter and black x over the battery icon. system profiler says no battery is installed.. so i called applecare and they did some tests and reset some things and still nothing so they sent out a new battery even though i wasn’t on the recall list. (also have the updates installed) anyway… so i got the new battery all excited thinking it was fixed and same thing… so i called applecare again (thank god i have it) and he put me on hold for a long time and said he needed a product specialist but it would be better to have an “apple genius” look at it in the store. so i have to drive 30 minutes (not bad, i know, but still out of the way) to the apple store.

i’m glad i’m not the only one with this problem but unlike some of you who got the problem fixed with a new battery, that did not fix mine and i’m unable to unplug it. (or it dies, as most of you know)

so if anyone has any suggestions before i take it in tomorrow, let me know. this will be the second time it’s been in for repair in the past 5 months. i love it to death, but i think this is strange.

if anyone has any suggestions (besides resetting the power management and holding the PR command/option key at boot and holding the power button down and unplugging it and all that)
p.s. i also had to get a new power adapter because my original one was overheating and getting frayed… could that be doing this?? then why does the computer say no battery installed?

i’d like to hear your stories, what happened, advice, etc.
