Kickin’ it with Yaly Couture

The past few days we splurged a bit in Hoi An and got clothes, shoes and bags made. It's a very surreal experience! We found one tailor on recommendations, Yaly Couture, who treated us well and made some excellent clothes!

Last night, we had one of the more surreal experiences of the trip! We were back at the store for another fitting, and were invited by the boss to come to their Christmas party! We were treated to free beer, food and even got up to sing (badly) some Christmas songs.

It was funnily enough, lots of fun! We met the cutest kid there, too:

Today, we flew into Saigon, where we'll be for the next 2 or 3 days. After that, who knows!

Same Same, But Different

A running joke in the past week is how alike Will and Mathias (a Swede we travelled with) are, with opposite skin colours. I think this picture sums it up (Will on the left, Mathias on the right):

Note the Beer Lao in hand, and the "swagger". :)

Farewell to the lovely Luang Prabang, greetings Hanoi!

The last couple of days in Luang Prabang were amazing.

I loved the architecture, the temperature was just right and there was amazing food everywhere!

We ate most nights at the Hmong night market (just around the corner from where we were staying - Seng Phet Guesthouse, highly recommended), where we encountered "boring" dishes like noodles, chilli fish, pork & chicken buns and spring rolls. There were also more interesting dishes, like pig's brain, buffalo and chicken heads, which Rich was game enough to try:

For a pittance, we always managed to have a feast:

I was in heaven! Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and we had to say bye to our new-found friends (2 Aussies and a random Swede). Although we only spent 8 days together, it feels like we've known each other a lifetime! I'm going to miss you Richard, Mara and Mathias!

We flew to Hanoi yesterday. Laos is desolate in comparison to the throngs of scooters, cars and people in the streets of Hanoi.

Being able to eat Pho on the side of the street (for less than US$1) has been great, though:

I'm looking forward to exploring more of Hanoi and the rest of Vietnam over the next week!

An ode to the humble Kolhapuri

While in India I fell in love with the Kolhapuri (a type of sandal from the state of Maharastra, I believe):

We were lucky enough to find a pair in Delhi (thanks Anica!), and I have to say these are the most comfortable sandals/thongs/flip-flops I have ever had the pleasure of wearing!

Indian food - how I have missed thee!

We arrived in Luang Prabang today, and treated ourselves to some Indian food at "Nazim's" on the shores of the Mekong River:

Malai kofta, garlic naan and masala chai, oh my! Not as good as the real thing, but getting there. :)

Still loving Laos

We're still in Vang Vieng, soaking up the atmosphere and relaxing. What's not to love when we're surrounded by beautiful rivers and mountains?

We went tubing yesterday down the Nam Song (I think the name is right), which involved floating down the river on an inflatable rubber tyre, meeting other tourists, drinking and eating and swinging from great heights into the water. Quite possibly the most tourist-y activity I've done on this trip. But oh so fun!

The scenery along the river was breathtaking - I wish I had more time to enjoy it and take in the beauty. (It's very "thinky", to use Manasi's word.) I can't believe that there's this little slice of paradise tucked in between Thailand and Vietnam!

Relaxing in Vang Vieng

Today was another lazy day in Laos. Hopped on a short bus from Vientiane to Vang Vieng, where we were greeted by views like this:

Simply divine.

We also continued our culinary tour of Laotian food (in comfort, of course):

… and also came across some more "interesting" local delicacies:

Not my thing, but funny regardless. :)

Soaking up Vientiane

In a slight turn of events, we headed to Vientiane instead of Chiang Mai last night. Vientiane is quite nice! Very laid-back and enjoyable. We've met a bunch of Aussies, Brits, a Swede and a Swiss girl as well.

In the meantime, Will has gotten in touch with his alcoholism:

He's also shaved his head:

I'm loving the French influences in Laos. Chocolate croissant and a (good) coffee! Heeeaven.

Tomorrow, we're off to Vang Vien!

Hello and goodbye Koh Samui!

Manny and I flew into Koh Samui on Wednesday (the 6th) to meet Will. Our plan was to go to the full moon party on Koh Pangan that night, but my cold had become worse (breaking into coughing fits on a plane is NOT a good thing!), so we ended up sleeping most of the day and chilling with some Norwegians that night.

The shift from India to Koh Samui hasn't been so easy for me. To go from chaos to a laid-back tourist mecca was a bit of a reverse culture-shock. It was actually depressing to spend time in Koh Samui - after 2 intense weeks in India (the conference and travelling), relaxing was the last thing I needed! I think I'm India-sick - I can't wait to go back!

Koh Samui was quite nice, though. We were greeted with this view on the ferry back to the mainland:

Next stop is going to be Chang Mai, then across the border into Laos! - I take that back. We found out that due to a flower festival in Chiang Mai, all trains and buses to the city were full. We decided to go straight to Laos instead!
