I came across a plugin for WordPress by Michele Finotto that allows you to highlight certain posts as "favourites".
A similar plugin was mentioned a while ago on Binary Bonsai, but was never released.
This one seems to work quite well, though. Thanks, Michele!
I took the jump and upgraded to WordPress 1.5… I've been running it on a test installation for about a month or so now. Unfortunately, the upgrade didn't go perfectly, so I've had to stuff around with things. It should all be fixed now.
Along with that, there's a new design, which is based on the popular Kubrick theme, by Michael Heilemann.
A couple of notable things I've added:
- A rotating banner across the top, featuring a couple of landscapes or pictures I've taken.
- Random photos from my Flickr account. (More on that later.)
- A photo gallery page that pulls the "photosets" directly from Flickr.
A couple of things didn't make it, however:
- Nested comments. I heavily modified Kubrick to get the comments the way I wanted, and when it came to integrating that with the nested comments code, I struggled. If I'm feeling masochistic in the future I might have another go.
- Subscribing to comments - not sure if this was used (are there even any readers out there? ;)), but it was causing conflicts.
That's about all I can think of, for now! Comments are welcome.
UPDATE: I did forget to mention one thing. The RSS feed has changed to http://www.higgs-family.net/~jeremy/feed/. I'm working on setting up a redirect that will solve any problems with people who are subscribed already.
Shelley Powers talks about Wordpress 1.3 being just around the corner. She also mentions some of the new features, which sound great!
Matt Mullenweg has provided a plugin for Wordpress that aims to block the spambots currently harassing lots and lots of Wordpress blogs (mine included). Hopefully it'll work (although I haven't got any spam for the past day or two…).
Courtesy of Michael Heilemann, I found a patch for the xmlrpc.php file in WordPress 1.2 that allows for image uploading and other features when using ecto or MarsEdit. The post is here.
I installed a new plugin for WordPress today, called Kitten's Spam Words, which I found on Dougal Campbell's post on comment spamming.
The plugin allows me to delete particular comments and mark them as spam. Future comments with similar attributes are automatically added to the moderation queue, which is nice.
I also thought about using the Spammer Tar Pit or Kitten's Comment Pay, but thought it would be a bit harsh. That's not to say it wouldn't be fun, though.
Thanks to Kitta at kitta.net (whose blog I discovered today, by way of Matt Mullenweg), I've found an implementation of nicetitles that works with OmniWeb 5 (and thus Safari)!
It's gray and standard right now, but I might play around with the colours and background a bit if I feel creative.
Kitta also provided a link to Dunstan's Easy CSS Drop Shadows, which I plan on using.
(I found the links on her Colophon page, for anyone who's interested.)
EDIT: If you try and download the files for the CSS Drop Shadows (located at http://download.1976design.com/dropshadows/), it downloads a file called "index.html" (at least in OmniWeb). I figured out that it's actually a ZIP file, so just rename it and add a .zip extension.
that some of the links have little arrows at the right. I borrowed this idea off Michael at Binary Bonsai by looking at his CSS file. Here's the code I used:
.storycontent a[href*="http"] {
padding-right: 6px;
background: url('wp-images/out.gif') right top no-repeat;
margin-right: 2px;
}
.storycontent a[href*="www.higgs-family.net"] {
padding-right: 0px;
background: url(none);
margin-right: 0px;
}
Thanks, Michael!
Michael over at Binary Bonsai just posted on a plugin that has been created by Brian Meidell, called Nested Comments.
All I had to do was replace two of the wp-comments* files, drop in the plugin and activate it, and it worked! Marvellous.
Looks great, too.
Just saw over at PhotoMatt that Matt is being hit with the same spammer that I am… tramadol.
I've had about 7 comments over the past couple of hours, so not as bad as the 90 in 2 hours that Matt had, but still annoying.
At first it wasn't blocked by the Wordpress blacklist, but I added the following to the blacklist (under Options -> Discussion), and they now go into the moderation queue, where I can delete them:
61.30.47.21
tramadol
Go wordpress!
[EDIT: Whoops. Fixed up spelling of title.]
